Indian mashed potatoes - Aloo Chokha (Aloo Bharta)

This Indian mashed potato(known as aloo chokha or aloo barta) is a traditional Bihari recipe. If you are bored of regular mashed potatoes, you should try this spiced version, and I am sure you will love it. This recipe is naturally vegan and gluten-free.

Ingredients

  • ½ lb potatoes around 250 gms
  • cup finely chopped onion
  • 3 tablespoon chopped cilantro leaves
  • 1 green chili finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper powder
  • ½ teaspoon cumin powder
  • 1 teaspoon mustard oil
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  • Cook the potatoes and keep them aside. You can boil or steam the potatoes. I usually chop the potatoes into equal-sized cubes and boil them with sufficient water.
  • While potatoes are cooking, finely chop onion, green chili, and cilantro leaves.
  • Now take a mixing bowl and add boiled potatoes.
  • Mash the potatoes using a potato masher. Unlike mashed potatoes, these can be slightly chunky.
  • To this mashed potatoes, add all ingredients - finely chopped onion, green chili, cilantro leaves, ground black pepper, roasted cumin powder, salt, lemon juice, oil. Mix everything well.
  • Delicious and flavorful Indian-style mashed potatoes is ready to serve!

Notes

Adjust green chili, pepper powder, lime juice and salt according to your preference.
