Why I Always Rinse Basmati Rice Before Cooking
Rinsing is the first step I follow for any type of basmati rice, whether I'm cooking it in the Instant Pot, on the stovetop, or in a rice cooker.
- Removes surface starch: This starch turns gummy during cooking if not washed off.
- Helps rice elongate and fluff up: Clean grains cook more evenly and expand better.
- Gets rid of any residue: Rinsing clears out dust and tiny particles from the packaging.
How to Rinse Basmati Rice
Time needed: 10 minutes
You can rinse the rice in a bowl or use a sieve; both methods work fine. Use what's easiest for you.
- Start With Measured Rice
Start with your measured basmati rice in a fine-mesh sieve or a bowl.
- Rinse Method 1: Under Running Water
Rinse the rice under cold water while gently swirling the grains with your hand.
- Rinse Method 2: In a Bowl
Add water to the rice and agitate gently; the water turns cloudy quickly.
- Check the Water
This cloudy water is excess starch. It's what makes rice sticky if not rinsed away.
- Repeat Until Clear
Rinse 3 to 4 times until the water stays mostly clear even after swirling.
Why Soak Basmati Rice? (Highly Recommended)
Soaking helps the rice cook beautifully, especially when you want longer, separate grains, such as in biryanis or pulao.
- Improves elongation: The grains absorb water gradually and expand better.
- Speeds up cooking: Soaking rice makes it cook a little faster in any method.
- Reduces breakage: Hydrated grains are less likely to split during cooking.

How I Soak Basmati Rice

Step 1: After rinsing, move the rice to a clean bowl.

Step 2: Add enough water to cover the rice by at least 1 inch.

Step 3: Let It Soak for 20-30 Minutes. This is the sweet spot, where there is enough time for hydration without making the grains too soft. Drain the rice completely using a sieve before cooking.
💡 Note: Draining soaked rice well is very important, especially if you're following a precise water ratio method like in my Instant Pot Basmati Rice Recipe or Rice Cooker Basmati Method.
Rinsing and soaking basmati rice are two small steps that lead to significant results. If you've ever struggled with sticky or broken grains, give this method a try. It's a simple fix that works every time in my kitchen.
