This plantain curry (raw banana poriyal or aratikaya kura) is a quick and easy recipe with grated raw bananas or plantains that goes well with rice or roti.

Raw banana or plantain or Aratikaya ( in Telugu) is a highly nutritious vegetable that you should include in your diet at least once a week or once in 10 days.

This aratikaya kura (as we call it in Telugu) is a quick and easy recipe and makes a good side dish for rice or roti.

As this plantain curry is mildly spiced, even kids will enjoy it. So make it once, you will love it.

    Let's begin making aratikaya kura

    • Peel the raw banana or aratikaya with a peeler and grate it. You need not remove the complete skin of the banana as the peel is more nutritious. Just peel the green layer on the top.
    • Slice the onions lengthwise and keep them ready.
    • Heat a pan, preferably a big one so that we can mix the curry easily. Add oil to it.
    • Once it is hot, add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, red chili, and green chili.
    • Once the seeds start spluttering, add sliced onion.
    • Let them fry for a couple of minutes.
    • To this onion mixture, add grated raw banana, salt, coriander seeds powder, and turmeric powder.
    • Mix it well so that the grated raw banana is coated well with spices and onion mixture.
    • On a medium flame let it cook for 5 minutes. Scrape the bottom of the pan if it sticks. After 5 minutes, it will be like this.
    • Cook it for 4 to 5 more minutes and once the raw banana is cooked well, add grated coconut powder.
    • Mix it well and dish out the plantain curry.
    • Serve it with hot rice or phulka or any Indian flatbread.

    Recipe Notes and variations:

    • Make sure to mix the curry every 2 to 3 minutes so that the raw banana cooks evenly.
    • By making this curry in a big pan, we can mix it easily.
    • Usually, south Indian curries will have raw coconut in them. But instead of raw coconut powder, you can use peanut powder also.
    • It will take around 10 minutes for plantain to cook as we grated them.
    • You can also chop the plantain and in that case, it will take more time to cook. Cover the pan with a lid and it will be cooked on steam. You need not add water for cooking.
