This guide brings together my favorite side dishes for chapati, naan, and paratha, all organized into simple categories. Whether you're in the mood for a light dal with chapati, a vegetable curry for paratha, or a rich, creamy dish for naan, you'll find plenty of ideas here to mix and match.

Indian flatbreads are the backbone of my everyday meals. From the soft chapati that we eat daily to the festive naan or a flaky paratha on weekends, each bread has its perfect partner. The right side dish not only complements the flatbread but also makes the meal more satisfying and complete.

A Quick Guide to the Flatbreads

    • Chapati: Soft, thin, and unleavened whole wheat bread that's part of our everyday meals. Its mild flavor and light texture make it perfect for scooping up thin dals and simple curries.
    • Naan: A thicker, leavened bread often cooked in a tandoor. Soft, chewy, and sometimes brushed with butter. It's best enjoyed with rich, creamy gravies.
    • Paratha: Flaky and layered, made with whole wheat flour and a touch of ghee or oil. It can be plain or stuffed, and its hearty texture pairs beautifully with dry sabzis and thick curries.

    Side Dishes For Indian Flatbreads

I've organized my chapati side dish recipes into easy sections. You can browse through the links below to find recipes for dals, vegetable curries, beans and legumes, or paneer. Click on the category you're interested in and explore more dishes.

    Dal & Lentil Curries

Dal is true comfort food. At my home, we eat it almost daily with chapati or rice. A light, brothy dal pairs perfectly with chapati, while a thicker, creamy version is ideal with naan. Lentils bring warmth, earthiness, and so much versatility to the table.

    Vegetable Sides

Vegetable curries are where you can play with flavor and texture. A dry sabzi with seasonal vegetables pairs wonderfully with paratha, while a saucy curry soaks beautifully into chapati or naan. These dishes are everyday staples that make meals colorful and wholesome.

    Hearty Bean & Legume Dishes

When you want something hearty and filling, bean and legume curries are the answer. Rajma with naan or chana masala with chapati are classic pairings I often come back to. These dishes are packed with protein and flavor, making a simple flatbread meal feel extra satisfying.

    Paneer & Tofu Dishes

Paneer is a favorite in most Indian homes, and tofu is a great substitute for those who prefer plant-based options. A dry paneer bhurji is perfect wrapped inside parathas, while creamy paneer or tofu curries taste best with naan. These dishes always make flatbread meals feel a little more special.

    Chutneys & Condiments

Sometimes it's the little extras that bring the meal together. A spoonful of chutney, a spiced yogurt, or even a quick pickle can brighten the plate and balance the rich flavors of curries and breads. I always keep one or two of these on hand to make meals more exciting.
