Need a quick lunch that does not require cooking? This Indian Avocado Chickpea Salad turns cooked chickpeas, ripe avocado, cucumber, onion, tomato, coriander, lemon, and everyday Indian spices into a fresh meal in 10 minutes. The soft avocado goes well with the firm chickpeas and crunchy vegetables.
You can use home-cooked or canned chickpeas. I find this especially useful on busy weekdays when I already have cooked chickpeas in the fridge. If you have more chickpeas to use, my Indian chickpea recipes collection has ideas for curries, salads, and snacks.

Creamy Avocado and Chaat-Style Spices Keep It Simple

I use lemon juice and dry spices to season this salad. As I toss everything together, a little of the ripe avocado coats the chickpeas and vegetables. I add the avocado last and toss gently so most of the pieces stay whole.
For this batch, I cooked soaked chickpeas using my Instant Pot chickpeas method. I used black salt in the salad and skipped regular salt. If you use canned or unsalted chickpeas, taste the salad first and add regular salt only if needed.
Happy Cooking!

Serving Tips
At home, I serve this salad on its own for a light lunch or add it to a rice or roti meal. It also works well when I want something fresh alongside a warm dish.
- With rice: Serve it alongside tomato rice, lemon rice, or Indian fried rice.
- In a chapati wrap: Spoon it into a warm chapati with a little green chutney. My chapati wrap guide has more spread and filling ideas.
- On toast: Spoon leftover salad over toasted bread. You can also try my Indian spiced chickpea avocado toast for a version with a chunky mashed topping.
- With vegetable sides: Serve it with roasted vegetables, steamed sweet potato, roasted potatoes, or Indian spiced mashed potatoes.

Notes
Tested Tips from My Kitchen
- Taste before adding salt. I cooked the soaked chickpeas in the Instant Pot with salt, so I used only black salt in the salad and skipped regular salt.
- Rinse canned chickpeas well. Drain them completely before adding them to the salad. Taste the mixed salad before adding salt.
- Try the chaat masala variation. Use ยฝ teaspoon chaat masala instead of the coriander powder, roasted cumin powder, red chili powder, and black salt.
- Use roasted chickpeas for more crunch. Replace the plain cooked chickpeas with Indian spiced roasted chickpeas. Skip the salt and red chili powder because the chickpeas are already seasoned. Mix them into the salad just before serving.
- Keep the avocado chunky. Add it last and toss gently so most of the pieces hold their shape.
- Use leftovers on toast. Spoon leftover salad over toasted bread to make a quick avocado chickpea toast.
