Paneer and tofu are my go-to vegetarian proteins when I want to make Indian flatbreads like chapati, naan, or paratha, the star of the meal. They soak up flavors beautifully, whether in a creamy curry, a rustic scramble, or a smoky baked dish, and add a satisfying richness that makes every bite more enjoyable.

In this collection, I'm sharing five tried-and-tested paneer and tofu recipes from my kitchen, along with pairing suggestions to help you choose the perfect bread to accompany them. Whether it's a quick weeknight chapati, a flaky weekend paratha, or a celebratory naan, you'll find the perfect match here.

Paneer and Tofu Side Dishes for Chapati, Naan & Paratha

Here are my favorite paneer and tofu Indian sides that taste delicious with all Indian flatbreads.

Palak Paneer Bhurji (Scrambled Spinach and Paneer)

Close-up of spinach paneer bhurji served in a white bowl, showing crumbled paneer with sautรฉed spinach and capsicum.
This isn't the creamy palak paneer you might expect; it's a quick and rustic bhurji where crumbled paneer is cooked with finely chopped spinach, onions, and spices. Perfect for when you want something dry yet full of flavor.
    Best Pairings:
Chapati โ€“ The semi-dry texture clings perfectly to chapati, making each scoop effortless.
Naan โ€“ Choose a lighter naan so it doesn't overpower the earthy flavor of the spinach.
Paratha โ€“ My favorite choice. The flaky layers hold the paneer-spinach mix beautifully for a hearty bite.

    Broccoli Paneer Curry

Tender broccoli and soft paneer cubes simmer in a spiced tomato-onion gravy. A little fusion, a lot of flavor, it's a great way to add variety to a classic Indian meal.
    Best Pairings:
Chapati โ€“ Perfect for a wholesome, hearty lunch or dinner.
Naan โ€“ Garlic naan makes scooping up the chunky curry irresistible.
Paratha โ€“ Holds up well to the thicker gravy and chunky vegetables.

Saag Tofu (Tofu in a Spinach & Greens Gravy)

    palak tofu in a bowl
Firm tofu cubes are pan-seared for a crisp edge, then simmered in a velvety gravy of spinach and other greens. It's creamy, earthy, and full of flavor.
    Best Pairings:
Chapati โ€“ A classic match, the soft bread soaks up every drop of gravy.
Naan โ€“ Garlic or butter naan makes it more decadent and more indulgent.
Paratha โ€“ A plain paratha is just right for mopping up the thick saag.

Methi Corn Paneer (Fenugreek, Corn & Indian Cottage Cheese Curry)

Close-up of creamy methi corn paneer gravy curry served in a small steel bowl with chapati on the side.
Fresh or dried fenugreek leaves (methi) bring a slightly bitter note, perfectly balanced by the sweetness of corn and the creaminess of paneer. It's vibrant and aromatic.
    Best Pairings:
Chapati โ€“ Let the methi-corn flavors shine without distraction.
Naan โ€“ A plain naan works best to keep the flavors balanced.
Paratha โ€“ Buttery layers carry the rich gravy beautifully.

    Baked Paneer (Spiced & Marinated)

baked paneer with veggies in a tray
Paneer cubes marinated in yogurt and spices, then baked until golden with a light smoky flavor. You can serve it as a dry side or toss it into a light gravy.
    Best Pairings:
Chapati โ€“ The smoky flavor is a lovely contrast to the soft bread.
Naan โ€“ My top pick here, use it to wrap the paneer into a roll.
Paratha โ€“ Works well for making stuffed-style rolls on the go.

These recipes are more than just side dishes; they're a delicious way to celebrate the variety of Indian flatbreads. Whether you choose chapati, naan, or paratha, the right pairing makes the meal truly special.
