Looking for a simple way to cook millet without babysitting the stove? This hands-off rice cooker millet recipe is my go-to method when I need a quick, fluffy grain for lunch or dinner. With just a rinse, pour, and press of a button, you'll get perfectly cooked millet every single time and no guesswork!

I often make it while I prep other dishes or even while getting the kids ready for school; that's how little attention it needs! If you've tried my Instant Pot Millet or Stovetop Millet, you'll love how effortlessly this rice cooker version fits into your routine.

    Why I Love This Method

    (and Why You Will Too!)

I often use my rice cooker to simplify busy mornings. Whether I'm making millet for a warm breakfast bowl or prepping ahead for dinner, this method saves me time and effort. The grains turn out soft yet separate, and it pairs beautifully with curries, stir-fries, or even simple dal. Compared to cooking on the stovetop, this feels like a mini kitchen win every time!
If you're new to millet, this is the perfect place to start. Just like my foolproof Rice Cooker Basmati Rice or Rice Cooker Quinoa, this method makes it easy to add more whole grains to your meals.

    Happy Cooking!

    Detailed Steps

Here are the simple steps that I follow to cook the millet in the rice cooker:

Uncooked millet added to the inner pot of a rice cooker, ready for rinsing.

Step 1: Wash millet in a fine-mesh sieve and add the rinsed millet to the rice cooker bowl.

Millet soaked in water inside the rice cooker pot, just before starting the cooking process.

Step 2: Now add water/broth, salt, and optional oil.

Step 3: Close the lid and press "White Rice" or "Cook" and let it finish automatically.

Freshly cooked fluffy millet inside the rice cooker pot after cooking is complete.

Step 4: Keep on "Warm" for 10-15 minutes, then fluff with a fork. Enjoy warm or store for later use.

    How to Use Cooked Millet

Cooked millet is incredibly versatile. I always have some in the fridge! Here are my favorite ways to use it:

    • Millet Salad - Toss with fresh veggies and a light dressing for a wholesome lunch.
    • Millet Lemon Rice - A refreshing, tangy take on a South Indian classic.

    Notes

    Tested Tips from My Kitchen

    • Water ratio matters: Stick to 1:2 millet-to-water for the best texture.
    • Don't skip the rinse: Always rinse millet thoroughly to remove any dust and its natural bitterness. It improves flavor and helps prevent clumping.
    • Soaking Tip: If you soak millet overnight, reduce the water to 1.5 cups per 1 cup of millet for fluffier results.
    • Flavor boost: Use broth or add a pinch of herbs while cooking.
    • Storage tip: Let the cooked millet cool completely before storing in the fridge to avoid sogginess. Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
